KOLKATA: A woman from the Rajkol village in West Bengal's Nadia gave birth to a girl in a Border Security Force (BSF) ambulance on Tuesday morning while being taken to a hospital.


Rajkol village is situated along the Bangladesh border.

Normally, residents of such villages are in conflict with the BSF over restrictions imposed by the security agency as per laid down norms.

However, when the Border Outpost (BOP) commander received an appeal for evacuation of Siuli Mondal, who was in an advanced state of labour, BSF troops sent her to the Bongaon Hospital in their ambulance.

"At 6.30am, when the ambulance was proceeding towards the hospital, Siuli delivered the baby. She was assisted by our personnel in the ambulance. At the hospital, doctors carried out checks and said that both mother and child are healthy. We have heard that children born on civil aircraft and trains are given lifetime passes. We wish the child good health and would never want her to board another ambulance in life. Maybe, she will grow up and join the BSF," an official of the 99Bn said.

"While performing our duties on the border, we do not give up on our humanitarian side. We are there to extend all assistance to the border population," BSF commandant Sanjeev Kumar.
