SILIGURI: A Siliguri resident, in his late 20s, has told police that he stabbed his wife to death, chopped her body and disposed of it in a canal on Christmas Eve, suspecting her of having an affair.
Md Ansarul was produced in a Siliguri court on Thursday, which remanded him in two weeks’ police custody. The cops have launched a massive hunt to trace the body parts.
Police sources said Ansarul and Renuka Khatun, who have been married for six years and have a young son, stayed in Dada Bhai Colony under Ward 43 of Siliguri Municipal Corporation. Renuka’s family had lodged a complaint with the Siliguri police station on Christmas Day after being unable to get in touch with her since the previous day, neither on the phone nor in person.
The cops said they suspected Ansarul from the start. “He gave contradictory and misleading statements. However, he confessed to the crime after prolonged questioning,” said an officer. Ansarul told the cops that he took Renuka for a ride on his motorcycle to Phansidewa, about 10km away. “There, on reaching a canal, he stabbed her to death and chopped her body in two,” said the officer, adding, “He put the head and torso in two sacks and threw them into the canal waters.
”
From Thursday morning, the Siliguri cops, aided by the State Disaster Relief Force (SDRF), have been searching for the body parts, but have met with little su-ccess yet, said Siliguri additional DCP Shubhendra Kumar.
Renuka had recently enrolled in a beauticians’ course in Siliguri’s College Para. Ansarul claims she used to “frequently talk with a stranger”, a claim the cops were yet to corroborate.
