Showers bring temp down, Met predicts more thunderstorms over next few days

Kolkata: Spells of showers since morning on Thursday kept the city cool. Brace for more rain in the next few days as the Met office has predicted thunderstorm activities in the city as well as many other parts of south Bengal in the next few days, including on Saturday when the newly appointed BJP MLAs are expected to take oath. But unlike Thursday, Met officials said the possibility of rain is higher post noon.On Thursday, the Alipore Met office recorded a rain amount of 48 mm till late evening, while another thundershower spell hit the city on Thursday night as well. The thundershowers and the partly cloudy sky forced the mercury to dip further from 33.7°C on Wednesday to 30.8°C. Thursday was the third straight day of the city encountering thundershowers, including an intense spell on Wednesday night along with gusty wind that left few low-lying pockets in the city flooded for hours."Factors including an upper air cyclonic circulation over east Bihar, abundant moisture in the lower level continue to make the conditions favourable for more thunderstorm activities in Kolkata as well as some other south Bengal districts in the next four to five days. While the intensity would vary, possibility of one or few spells of rain every day is very high for now," said head of Regional Meteorological Centre Kolkata HR Biswas. "So far our rain forecast for Kolkata on Saturday is yellow and we will update it as and when we find factors that could influence the intensity of the thundershower. The chance for rain on that day in the morning is only about 30%%, with possibility increasing to around 70% towards the afternoon onwards," added Biswas.There was a north-south divide in the rainfall pattern. While northern neighbourhoods and areas prone to waterlogging such as Dum Dum, Thanthania, Chittaranjan Avenue, College Street, Amherst Street received less rains, southern parts such as Jodhpur Park, Kalighat, Chetla. Tollygunge, Ballygunge, Golf Green, Behala witnessed spells of heavy rain between 11am to 3 pm. Rainfall as recorded by the KMC drainage pumping stations like Jodhpur Park, Ballygunge, Kudghat, Mominpur, Chetla ranged between 32mm to 58 mm, said a KMC drainage dept senior official.The frequent rain spell has prevented the mercury from surging past the normal mark on any of the seven days.
