Rain floods central & N Kol, more in store for next 2 days
Kolkata: The city received multiple spells of showers that pulled the maximum temperature below the 30°C mark on Monday. Even though the rain was moderate, it led to waterlogging in some parts of central and north Kolkata. The showers will continue for the next two days, with heavy rain in some parts of south Bengal, said the Met office. Kolkata received 39.1 mm of rain on Monday, the highest recorded in a day during the last fortnight.
Monday's rain was triggered by an upper air cyclonic circulation that lay over east Bihar and the neighbourhood between 3.1 and 5.8 km above mean sea level. "Along with moisture incursion, this system has been leading to cloud formation over Gangetic Bengal. We expect sporadic showers to continue, with occasional heavy spells in some parts of south Bengal. Kolkata will continue to receive light to moderate spells," said Regional Meteorological Centre scientist Sourish Bandopadhyay.
A bulletin issued by the RMC on Monday said: "Under the presence of the above meteorological conditions (cyclonic circulation) and strong moisture incursion, widespread light to moderate rainfall with heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places is very likely over the districts of North Bengal. Light to moderate rainfall at many places with isolated heavy rainfall and thunderstorm with lightning activity is very likely over districts of south Bengal."
