Iconic filmmaker Mrinal Sen turns 94

KOLKATA: Veteran film maker Mrinal Sen turned 94 on Sunday and to mark the occasion many of his fans and friends came to his apartment at

Puddapukur in Bhowanipore

who looked mentally cheerful despite his old age.

The director's son, Kunal was there to greet him and so were several of his friends - veteran cinematographers and directors.

Winner of 12 international film awards, Mrinal Sen, a Padma Bhusan and Dada Saheb Phalke awardee, along with Satyajit Ray and Ritwik Ghatak gave birth to parallel cinema in the country and reshaped the profile of Indian cinema, starting with Bhuvan Shome, a landmark in modern Indian cinema.

Three of his other path-breaking films are Calcutta 71, Ek Din Pratidin and Chalchitra that were screened at the Satyajit Ray Film & Television Institute (

SRFTI

) to mark the birth anniversary. The three films were part of a three-day Gita Sen restrospective, held in association with National Film Archive of India.
