Kolhapur: State govt recently approved Kolhapur Municipal Corporation's (KMC) projects worth Rs11crore for addressing concerns related to solid waste management.
The civic body has planned to set up a compost plant of 72 tonne per day capacity at the existing Kasba Bawda dumping yard and another one at Puikhadi to process wet waste generated in the suburbs.
The KMC has also proposed "transfer stations" at four locations in the city where dry waste will be taken and segregated for further disposal. These transfer stations will have a cumulative capacity of 40 tonners per day.
Paritosh Kankal, deputy commissioner of KMC, said, "The compost plant will yield good quality manure. Mainly waste from hotels and segregated wet waste from households will be treated at these two facilities. We have set a maximum deadline of one-year to commission these plants. Meanwhile, we will also stress on awareness activities so that waste is segregated by the citizens at source."
The city generates around 200 tonnes of solid waste every day. The KMC is going to carry out biomining of 2.12 lakh tonnes of legacy waste. After a long legal battle, the landfill site at Takala is cleared for dumping inert waste. The KMC has a 50 tonnes per day capacity biogas plant at Kasba Bawda site. With the help of this plant, power is generated from the facility.
