Kolhapur: A case was registered with the Gokul Shirgaon police station against two thieves for stealing a bag containing gold ornaments and cash amounting to Rs 25.4 lakh from a gold jewellery shop at Gokul Shirgaon in Kolhapur. The incident took place on Feb 24 at 8pm.
The theft took place along the busy Pune-Bengaluru National Highway and created a stir in the Gokul Shirgaon area. Traders demanded increased patrolling in commercial areas along the highway.
As per the police, local jeweller Prakash Bhosale (65), runs a gold shop at the entrance arch of Gokul Shirgaon. On Tuesday night, at 8pm, Bhosale kept gold ornaments and some cash in his bag and was about to shut the shop. He kept the bag on the counter of his shop, when two thieves suddenly grabbed it and fled.
The stolen jewellery included various gold items weighing 198 grams,. The estimated value of the jewellery is Rs 23.8 lakh. Rs 1.6 lakh in cash was also stolen, taking the total loss to Rs 25.4 lakh.
Inspector Anil Tanpure said, "The theft looks pre-planned. The CCTV footage of the area is being examined, and efforts are being made to trace the suspects."
