Kochi: Thanneerchal Park in Irumpanam, once a vibrant hub for families, will remain closed this summer despite official promises of a seasonal reopening.
The park has been in a state of deterioration since 2022, but hopes were raised when a rejuvenation project was announced. However, Tripunithura municipality has hit significant roadblocks in the implementation phase. While central govt funding, Rs 75 lakh under Amrut Scheme, arrived on schedule, a critical contribution of Rs 1 crore from Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA) was delayed, stalling the project's momentum.
"Only a part of the project has been implemented because the GCDA funds didn't arrive in time," said municipality chairperson P L Babu.
Adding to the frustration is a lack of contractor interest. The municipality has floated tenders for the remaining work twice but failed to attract bidders. A third tender has been issued, but due to election protocols, it cannot be opened until May 5.
With an estimated 1.5 months of work still required after the contract is awarded, the gates of Thanneerchal are unlikely to open until the monsoon season is well under way.
