Kottayam: Expelled Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) member A Irshad, accused of making derogatory remarks against LDF candidate U Pratibha, was arrested and let off on bail on Friday.
Irshad appeared at the station on Thursday night, following which his arrest was recorded before letting him out on bail, said Kayamkulam SHO.
Police on Thursday had registered a case against Irshad after recording Prathibha's statement. Police also said that Election Commission had directed registration of a case after finding that Irshad's remarks violated model code of conduct.
Irshad allegedly made objectionable remarks about Prathibha during a UDF campaign event, claiming she was ‘selling' her eloquence and beauty to secure a third consecutive win. He also accused the MLA of ‘failing' to work for the people.
Following the controversy, Irshad was removed from the party and relieved of election responsibilities. TNN & Agencies
