KANPUR: A Fortuner car travelling at 100 km/h on the Agra-Lucknow Expressway overturned near kilometre 241 in the Bangarmau area of Unnao district after crashing into boulders obscured by fog and sustaining a sudden tyre burst, killing four people on Tuesday morning.
The accident took place at around 5.15 AM near Nasirapur village on the expressway’s airstrip., while the driver, 20-year-old Abhinav Agrawal, was at the wheel of his father Ashok Agrawal’s vehicle. The SUV lost control, struck cement boulders used as dividers and overturned, sustaining severe front-end damage. Locals reported a loud explosion-like sound and rushed to the scene.
Passers-by alerted the police, who halted traffic on the expressway and, with a UPEIDA team, extracted the passengers from the wreckage one by one before sending the bodies for post-mortem examination.
Three of the deceased were identified as 55-year-old Ashok Kumar Agrawal of Raj Nagar Extension, Ghaziabad; Abhinav Agrawal, son of Satish Agrawal of Govindpuri Modi Nagar; and 25-year-old Aakash Agrawal, son of Vinod Agrawal of the same locality. Efforts are ongoing to identify the fourth victim. All were residents of Ghaziabad.
Inspector Kotwali Akhilesh Chandra Pandey said “All the deceased’s relatives have been notified.” Police reviewed CCTV footage from cameras on the expressway and determined that the tyre burst had caused the accident.
The damaged vehicle was removed with a crane and is now at the Bangarmau toll plaza. Efforts continue to identify the fourth deceased individual.
