Strategic rail push near Pakistan border: New lines to boost defence and connectivity in Rajasthan
JAISALMER: In a significant move to strengthen India’s strategic infrastructure near the international border with Pakistan, the Ministry of Railways has decided to develop new railway lines parallel to the border in a phased manner.
The initiative aims to enhance the operational readiness of the Indian Army while also improving connectivity in remote border regions.
Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw informed the Lok Sabha on Tuesday that Final Location Surveys (FLS) are currently underway for key proposed railway routes in Rajasthan’s border areas. These include the Anupgarh–Khajuwala–Jaisalmer line and the Jaisalmer–Barmer–Bhiladi route (via Barmer).
He stated that these proposed railway lines are being planned parallel to the India-Pakistan border, which will significantly strengthen connectivity in border regions while also offering strategic advantages.
The projects are expected to facilitate faster troop movement and improve logistical supply chains for the armed forces.
In addition to defence benefits, the railway expansion is likely to drive socio-economic development in remote areas. Regions such as Jaisalmer and Barmer are expected to witness growth in tourism, trade, and employment opportunities once the projects are completed.
The Railway Minister further informed that the Final Location Survey work is progressing steadily, and subsequent steps, including construction, will commence after its completion. He emphasised that such infrastructure projects in border areas are being given high priority by Indian Railways.
The proposed rail network will connect several key border regions, including Anupgarh, Bikaner, Khajuwala, Phalodi, Jaisalmer, Barmer, and Bhiladi, extending up to Bhabhar in Gujarat.
Notably, the Jaisalmer–Bhabhar/Bhiladi route is planned to span approximately 380km, while the Khajuwala–Jaisalmer line is expected to cover around 260km.
Highlighting the broader vision, Ashwini Vaishnaw said the initiative will not only ensure seamless military mobility along the border but also strengthen national security by integrating remote frontier areas through a robust railway network.
