Speeding Audi rams roadside eateries in Jaipur, kills 1, injures 15
JAIPUR: One person died and at least 15 were injured when a speeding luxury car mowed down several people by the roadside near Kharbas Circle off Vande Matram Road in Mansarowar Friday night. Confirming the fatality, DCP (South) Rajarshi Raj Varma said the number of those injured in the accident could rise.
Eyewitnesses said the red luxury car first rammed into Kharbas Circle and lost control before ploughing into food carts and shacks lining the road. People were having dinner and snacks at makeshift roadside eateries selling tea and other items when they were rammed into by the car.
"The car came at very high speed, struck the circle, lost control and flew straight into people milling by the roadside. There was a huge hue and cry, with several people writhing in pain," said Vijay Choudhary, an eyewitness.
Another eyewitness said the accident at around 9.20pm left people with no time to react, as the car bore down on them within seconds. "Some were crushed under the wheels of the car, others were tossed to the other side of the road; it was complete mayhem," said another person.
Eyewitnesses said the three people travelling in the car were pulled out and beaten up by members of the public. Muhana police station SHO Bhupendra Singh, one of the first officers to reach the spot, said the occupants of the luxury car had to be rescued from the angry crowd. "People were scattered all over the place; the car must have been driven at very high speed," he said.
The impact was so severe that steel cabins selling tea were twisted out of shape, with overturned carts and debris strewn across the road. Parts of the luxury car, broken pull-carts and food items were left scattered on the road.
Police said the car appeared to be registered out of state in the name of a trust. Investigations remain ongoing.
Incidentally, the first responders at the scene were three members of a special team of Jaipur police, who were in the area looking for a wanted suspect. In the melee that ensued after the crash, the suspect managed to flee, police said.
