Rajasthan woman poisoned to death over dowry demand; husband, in-laws get life sentence
JAISALMER: The Additional District and Sessions Court (ADJ) at Pokaran in Jaisalmer district has sentenced three persons, including the husband, to life imprisonment with rigorous imprisonment in a dowry death case. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 2 lakh each on all three convicts.
The prosecution in the case was represented by Additional Public Prosecutor Samandar Singh Rathore.
According to APP Samandar Singh Rathore, on February 12, 2019, complainant Deeparam, son of Andaram and resident of Someshwar village in Shergarh tehsil, submitted a written complaint stating that his sister Hawa was married to Dinaram, son of Chetan Ram, a resident of Uchpadra village, on June 25, 2018.
The complainant stated that dowry articles were given according to the family’s financial capacity at the time of marriage. However, after some time, Hawa’s husband Dinaram, mother-in-law Chuka Devi, and father-in-law Chetan Ram allegedly began mentally and physically harassing her for additional dowry.
He further stated that his sister informed the family about the harassment, after which several attempts were made by family members to counsel and settle the matter.
Rathore said that on February 11, 2019, Hawa called her parental home from her in-laws’ house and informed them that her husband and in-laws were threatening to kill her for not bringing a motorcycle as dowry.
Later the same night, the family received information that Hawa had been assaulted and allegedly poisoned to death.
Following the complaint, Bhaniyana Police Station registered a case and arrested husband Dinaram, father-in-law Chetan Ram, and mother-in-law Chuka Devi, who were subsequently produced before the court.
During the trial, the prosecution presented documentary evidence and witnesses before the court.
After hearing arguments from both sides, ADJ Court Judge Dr Mahendra Kumar Goyal convicted all three accused and sentenced them to rigorous life imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 2 lakh each.
The case on behalf of the prosecution was argued by Additional Public Prosecutor Samandar Singh Rathore.
