JAIPUR: CM Ashok Gehlot on Friday admitted that it was a mistake to appoint Col. Kesari Singh Rathore as a member of the Rajasthan Public Service Commission (RPSC) after some videos of the latter surfaced online in which he is seen making casteist remarks.

Gehlot said that Singh was appointed to the post based on his military background. “I am hurt by his comments on social media,” he said.

Rathore was among the three members appointed on Monday by the state government shortly before the model code of conduct for assembly elections came into force. Following the appointment, some videos of the retired army officer made rounds on social media, drawing flak from members of Jat and other communities.

He said the appointment was made quickly due to assembly elections. In a long post in Hindi on social media ‘X’, he said, “On the one hand, our government did the historic work of 3 lakh recruitments, which is probably the highest in the country, and on the other hand, some incidents of paper leaks came to light (similar situation prevails in most of the states, even in Army and Judiciary, papers were leaked).”

The Congress party hopes to overcome anti-incumbency and win the election by relying on social welfare schemes and freebies. The BJP, on the other hand, is banking on public support for Prime Minister Narendra Modi and has refrained from projecting Vasundhara Raje as its CM face. Key issues in the election include paper leaks, law and order, communal tensions, and corruption. The main players are Ashok Gehlot, Vasundhara Raje, and Sachin Pilot.
