Heritage train Valley Queen to run year-round as demand rises

Jaipur: In a boost to heritage tourism, North Western Railway (NWR) has extended operations of the Marwar Junction–Khambli Ghat–Marwar Junction Valley Queen metre gauge train from April 1 to Sept 30, making it a near year-round service for the first time in two years amid rising tourist demand.The train, which runs through the scenic Aravalli Hills, offers travellers a glimpse of India's fading metre gauge legacy, with tunnels, sharp curves and sweeping views drawing those seeking offbeat experiences. "In 2024 and 2025, the train services remained suspended during summers from April to July. However, this will be the first time the train will be operational for the whole year," Amit Sudarshan, Chief Public Relations Officer of NWR told TOI. He said the move is part of efforts to promote heritage rail circuits in Rajasthan. The Valley Queen has a capacity of 59 reserved berths, with a one-way fare of Rs 1,000. It comprises an AC Executive Car, two metre gauge coaches and a power car, while a General Second coach is reserved for staff, ensuring a limited and comfortable travel experience. Railway officials said the extension is also expected to benefit from increasing tourist footfall to the Jawai Leopard Safari region. Visitors heading for leopard sightings are likely to include the heritage train ride in their itineraries, boosting its appeal. Tourists can combine the journey with visits to nearby attractions such as Sumerpur and the Jain temples in Rajsamand district, adding cultural depth to the experience. "With Jawai fast emerging as a premium eco-tourism destination, the Valley Queen stands to benefit from the influx of safari tourists," said Sanjay Kaushik. "The extended operations will not only enhance tourist convenience but also position this route as a must-do experience on Rajasthan's tourism map," he added.
