Heatwave intensifies in Rajasthan, Barmer sizzles at 46.8°C
Jaipur: Severe heatwave conditions tightened their grip over western Rajasthan on Sunday, with Barmer recording the state’s highest temperature at a blistering 46.8°C, according to the Meteorological Centre Jaipur.
The weather department said heatwave conditions are likely to intensify further from Monday, particularly across western districts, even though isolated areas may witness light rain activity.
Officials said dry weather prevailed across Rajasthan over the past 24 hours, with no significant rainfall recorded anywhere in the state. The Met Office attributed the prevailing conditions to an active upper air cyclonic circulation and the weakening of western disturbances.
Residents of Jaipur woke up to a warmer morning with the minimum temperature settling at 27°C. It was followed by a scorching afternoon when a maximum temperature of 39°C was recorded. The Met Office said that no major change is likely Monday; however, Jaipur is likely to see its maximum temperature around 40.0°C or above Tuesday.
Western Rajasthan continued to bear the brunt of the extreme heat, with roads remaining largely deserted during the afternoon hours in several districts.
The prolonged heat has also aggravated water shortages and triggered frequent power cuts in many areas. Hospitals in districts such as Jaisalmer, Jodhpur, Bikaner, and Phalodi have reported a rise in patients complaining of heat-related illnesses.
After Barmer, the highest temperatures were recorded in Jaisalmer at 46.3°C, Phalodi at 46°C, Jodhpur at 44.6°C and Bikaner at 44.4°C. Chittorgarh recorded 43.4°C, while Sri Ganganagar and Jalore registered 43°C each. Kota recorded 41.8°C and Udaipur 41.6°C.
According to the weather department, temperatures in parts of Barmer, Jaisalmer and Phalodi remained 3°C to 5°C above normal, indicating severe heatwave conditions.
Night temperatures remained unusually high in desert districts, adding to discomfort and reducing relief from the daytime heat.
