Arunachal orgs honoured for river conservation bid

Itanagar: The Bhagirath Prayas Samman Award has been jointly conferred on Arunachal Pradesh’s Bhanu Tatak and Dibang Resistance for their exemplary conservation efforts in Dibang river basin.The award was given at the 10th edition of India Rivers Week hosted at BAIF Development Research Foundation, Pune on November 25. The citation for the award underscored the critical significance of the Dibang river and its tributaries in supporting one of India’s most biodiverse landscapes.Arunachal’s indigenous communities and their enduring relationship with these waterways have been crucial in sustaining downstream prosperity and well-being in the valleys of Assam for centuries, the citation read.Dibang Resistance was lauded for its relentless efforts, particularly in opposing the threat posed by mega hydropower dams proposed on the Dibang river, a tributary of the Brahmaputra. Tatak, acknowledged as the voice of Dibang, received praise for leveraging artistic and research skills in the fight for transparency and community control over projects that could potentially harm local communities and their ecology. Sold Down The River? Cleanup Going Nowhere

The National Green Tribunal ordered the rejuvenation of the polluted Yamuna river and set up a committee to oversee the process. The committee's plans, including the upgradation of sewage treatment plants and desilting of sewer lines, have faced delays, with the deadline pushed to 2024. The Supreme Court's intervention disrupted the committee's agenda. The Delhi government, through the Delhi Jal Board, has its own river revival agenda with a deadline of 2025. However, the river water continues to be polluted despite the efforts of multiple government agencies.

North Chennai youth to stage skit on river Kosasthalaiyar

North Chennai youth will stage a skit about the river Kosasthalaiyar at Don Bosco Youth Animation Centre in Ennore. The skit, titled 'There is a river in a place- What do you mean by a good city?', explores the ecology of the river and its impact on the local community's livelihood and culture. The stories and anecdotes in the skit have been collected from older members of the community. Entry to the event is free and it will take place on Sunday, November 26, at 4.30pm.
