Vikram Vyapar Mela: Over 41,000 vehicles sold, Rs 225 crore revenue generated

Indore/Ujjain: Ujjain Vikram Vyapar Mela concluded on a high note on Sunday with Ujjain RTO recording sale of over 41,000 vehicles that generated Rs 225 crore in revenue for the govt, leveraging on a lucrative 50% rebate on road tax for lifetime.The fair, a key component of Vikramotsav cultural festival, has seen exponential growth since its inception in 2024. This year's performance eclipsed all previous records, fuelled largely by buyers from neighbouring districts seeking massive savings on high-end automobiles.According to Regional Transport Officer (RTO) Santosh Malviya, the registration surge continued till late Sunday night. While the govt got Rs 225 crore in revenue, an equivalent amount was passed directly to consumers as tax discounts.A significant 80% of buyers at the fair came from nearby areas, particularly Indore. For luxury car enthusiasts, the 50% tax rebate translated into savings of several lakh rupees on various brands. Sources said that a car costing Rs 2.5 crore was also sold at the fair.Beyond the financial incentive, there is a growing public perception associated with the ‘MP-13' registration tag. As Ujjain is home turf of chief minister Mohan Yadav, many high-end buyers view the Ujjain registration as status symbol.Under Madhya Pradesh's dealer-point registration norms, customers can finalise their purchase in Ujjain to get the tax relief, while the dealers—registered with the Ujjain RTO—deliver the vehicles to buyers' home cities.Since 2024, the Vikram Vyapar Mela has facilitated the sale of over one lakh vehicles, collectively pouring Rs 500 crore into state's coffers.While Ujjain celebrates this retail boom, the Indore RTO has reportedly felt the financial brunt of the shift, as thousands of potential buyers migrated to the fair.
