Twin ‘green corridor’ help brain-dead donor give new lease of life to many
Indore: In an operation marking a major triumph of medical coordination, combined with human empathy, Indore opened two green corridors on Wednesday late night to transport the organs of a brain-dead donor. In death, Vijay Jaiswal, a resident of Khargone who perished in a road accident, provided a new lease of life to several critically ill patients across Indore and Ahmedabad.
Jaiswal met with a road accident on the morning of Feb 15 and was rushed to Jupiter Speciality Hospital. However, despite the best efforts of the medical team, he was declared brain-dead.Following the clinical confirmation, counsellors from the Muskan Group met with the family, who consented to donate his heart, liver, kidneys, pancreas, lungs, intestine and heart valves. To ensure the organs reached their desired destinations within the critical ‘ischaemic time' window, the Indore Traffic Police and health department coordinated to manage two simultaneous corridors. The first corridor was created from Jupiter Speciality Hospital to Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar Airport. Vijay's heart was rushed through this route to be flown to Marengo CIMS Hospital in Ahmedabad for an urgent transplant. The second corridor was created from Jupiter Speciality Hospital to Choithram Hospital to transport a kidney to a waiting patient. The donation followed a strictly organised medical process to save multiple lives, the senior officials said, adding that the liver and a kidney were transplanted into critical patients currently admitted at Jupiter Speciality Hospital, while the lungs, pancreas, intestine, and heart valves were also harvested in potentially life-saving procedures.Officials said the speed and efficiency displayed on Wednesday night were a testament to the city's evolving medical infrastructure and the growing awareness among its citizens. "Indore continues to set an example for the country. The bravery shown by the Jaiswal family, even in their moment of grief, is what makes these medical miracles possible," read a statement issued by Muskan Group representatives Jitu Bagani and Sandipan Arya.
