Ten pilgrims from Jharkhand rescued from Narmada at Omkareshwar

Indore: Ten pilgrims from Jharkhand were rescued after a boat capsized in the Narmada river at Omkareshwar on Friday afternoon. Two of them were reported to be in critical condition.The accident occurred near Navin Ghat when the boat hit a submerged rock and overturned midstream.According to Khandwa SP Manoj Rai, a group of around 52 pilgrims from Ranchi had arrived in Omkareshwar for pilgrimage and were moving in smaller groups across different ghats. Ten of them boarded a boat from Brahmpuri Ghat to reach Sangam Ghat when the accident occurred.Police said that the impact with the rock damaged a wooden plank of the boat (No. 225). Water rushed in quickly, destabilising the vessel within moments and causing it to overturn. All passengers fell into the river and began struggling in the current.Home guard personnel deployed at the ghats, along with local residents, launched an immediate rescue operation. All 10 pilgrims were pulled out of the river, averting a major tragedy. Two of them inhaled a significant amount of water, leading to breathing complications. They were first taken to Omkareshwar and later referred to Civil Hospital in Sanawad. Officials said the rest of the rescued passengers are stable.An inquiry has been launched into the incident.
