Heavy rain in Indore, Ujjain divisions increases water levels in major dams
Indore: Heavy rainfall in Indore and Ujjain divisions has increased levels in all major water bodies including Mandsaur’s Gandhi Sagar and Khandwa’s Omkareshwar Dam, making officials keep a close watch on the inflow.“Water level in Gandhi Sagar dam reached 1295.14 ft on Thursday. We have decided to fill it to 1304 ft. The dam receives water mainly from the Chambal river and its tributaries,” executive engineer HK Malviya said. “Around a month ago, water level here was at 1293 ft. During this duration, the dam received around 300 MCM water that increased its level by 2 ft,” he said.Omkareshwar Dam, in Khandwa’s Punasa tehsil, has also been receiving large quantity of water inflow that increased its level to 196.2 m. The local administration had decided to open 10 gates to release 3,096 cusec water on Wednesday after heavy rainfall on Tuesday night but later decided to fill the dam as its highest capacity was yet to be achieved, providing some relief to villages in its backwater from flood-like situation.
