Getting monsoon ready: IMC carries out pond rejuvenation, STP infra upgrade
Indore: Ahead of monsoon, Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) has started focusing on maximizing natural rainwater harvesting through pond rejuvenation and scaling up infrastructure to recycle treated sewage water for secondary uses.
A comprehensive Rs 1.40 crore restoration project is underway at Kanadia pond in Sanwer constituency. IMC commissioner Kshitij Singhal on Sunday reviewed the progress of several key operations aimed at expanding the pond’s water-holding capacity before arrival of rains.
He said that IMC was working to deepen the pond bed and remove blockages from natural inflow channels to ensure unobstructed rainwater harvesting. “We are also carrying out bund pitching, laying inlet and outlet pipelines, and setting up chain-link fencing along with developing entrance gates, pathways, and green belts along the perimeter” he said.
The civic body is also accelerating construction of high-capacity sewage treatment plants (STPs) under Amrit Project 2.0 to channel recycled water. “This recycled supply will directly serve urban gardening, public parks, and commercial construction projects, significantly relieving the burden on city’s fresh groundwater table,” Singhal said.
