Indore: Taking a tough stance against spread of misinformation, Indore police on Monday registered FIRs against five social media accounts for allegedly circulating a misleading video of a brawl. The accounts falsely claimed that the violent incident occurred during a recent concert in Indore, whereas the footage was actually from an old event in Mumbai.
The action follows strict directives from Indore police commissioner Santosh Kumar Singh to monitor and penalise those misusing social media to disturb public peace or spread factually incorrect content.
On March 21, 2026, a video began trending on Instagram and other social media platforms showing a physical altercation.
The captions claimed the fight took place during a concert by Punjabi singer Karan Aujla in Khajrana police station jurisdiction of Indore.
The Indore police social media monitoring team launched an investigation into the viral clip. Their findings revealed that the video was not from Indore, but was an old footage from a concert held in Mumbai. The misleading posts created a sense of panic and confusion among the local public, prompting the authorities to intervene.
The police identified five specific Instagram accounts responsible for the initial and most prominent spread of this fake news.
Following the action, the police have issued a formal advisory urging the public to be responsible digital citizens. "Do not share any unconfirmed or misleading information on social media. Before hitting ‘share' on any photo, video, or message, always verify its authenticity. Spreading rumours is a punishable offence," Singh said.
The social media cell remains on high alert, continuously monitoring platforms for any content that could potentially incite unrest or misinform the residents of Indore.
Meanwhile, Indore Municipal Corporation has recovered revenue of around Rs 57.50 lakh as entertainment tax from the event.
