Inter student dies by suicide, parents suspect academic stress may be trigger
Hyderabad: A 16-year-old Intermediate student allegedly died by suicide in her room at a junior college hostel in Madhapur on Tuesday night. Though there was no suicide note, the girl’s parents told police that they suspect academic stress for betterment of her marks in the exams starting Wednesday could be the reason for the suicide.
The deceased was identified as Maddepu Pooja Reddy, daughter of Gopi Reddy from Kodad town in Suryapet district. According to police, Pooja had joined the residential campus of a private junior college in Madhapur in 2025. “Pooja’s main subjects were maths, physics and chemistry. She scored 380 marks in the first-year board exams. Pooja went home for summer vacations and returned only three days ago to appear for supplementary exams starting Wednesday for betterment of her marks,” Madhapur inspector D Krishna Mohan said.
Around 8.30pm on Tuesday, Pooja died by suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling fan in the hostel room with a stole. “Other students were at study hours and Pooja was alone in the room as she was suffering from mild fever. Students saw her hanging about half an hour later and alerted the hostel staff. She was declared dead at a local hospital around 9.30pm,” the inspector said.
In their complaint to police, the girl’s parents said that their daughter might have felt stress to secure higher marks and died by suicide. Based on the father’s complaint, a case was registered under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). The body was handed over to the family after the post-mortem on Wednesday.
