Union minister Mandaviya will open sports hub in Dharwad today
Dharwad: The city is set to take a major step toward strengthening its sports infrastructure with the inauguration of a new multi-facility sports complex and an international-standard swimming pool near Court Circle on March 14. The facility will be formally inaugurated by Union minister for youth affairs and sports and labour and employment Mansukh Mandaviya on March 14 at 3.30pm.Union minister Pralhad Joshi and other elected representatives from the district will be present. The newly developed complex is expected to become an important centre for nurturing sporting talent in the region. One of the key highlights of the complex is the international-standard swimming pool, which meets competitive specifications and will allow swimmers from the region to train in professional conditions. The stadium complex has been designed with technical guidance from IIT Delhi and the School of Planning and Architecture, ensuring adherence to global standards. Constructed largely using modern steel technology, the facility includes an international-standard swimming pool, along with separate pools for children and adults. It also offers dedicated spaces for multiple indoor sports, supported by spectator galleries, equipment storage areas and athlete rooms.Union minister Pralhad Joshi had laid the foundation stone for the project in 2018, with the vision of redeveloping the old swimming facility into an international-level pool and a modern indoor sports hub—a vision now close to fruition. At one stage, construction came to a complete halt owing to a shortage of funds. The project regained momentum only after sustained public demand, leading to the mobilisation of Rs 50 crore through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) contributions from NMDC and ONGC. Designed as a multi-purpose sports hub, the G+3 complex includes parking on the ground floor, while upper floors will house courts for kabaddi, badminton and judo, gyms for men and women, a canteen, equipment stores, and rooms for trainers and doctors. In addition to the swimming facility, the sports complex includes multipurpose play areas and supporting infrastructure aimed at encouraging year-round sporting activities. The venue is designed to host tournaments, training camps and community sporting events, creating opportunities for young athletes from Dharwad and neighbouring districts.Officials say the new infrastructure will not only promote sports participation but also help identify and groom talented athletes capable of competing at district, state and national levels.Later in the evening, at 5.30pm, Union minister Mandaviya will attend the valedictory function of the Dharwad Parliamentary Constituency Sports Festival at the grounds of Karnatak Science College and distribute prizes to the winners.Deputy commissioner Snehal directed the officers of various departments to ensure that the two programmes are conducted hassle-free with proper coordination.
