Haveri: Haveri witnessed tension and outrage after miscreants vandalised a statue of Mahatma Gandhi at Gandhi Circle in the heart of the city on Basava Jayanti. The incident, which came to light early Monday, shocked residents and drew strong condemnation from public representatives and officials.
According to preliminary information, unidentified persons allegedly toppled and damaged the statue late Sunday night when the area was deserted. The act of desecration on a day of statewide celebration marking the birth anniversary of Jagajyoti Basaveshwar further intensified public anger.
Soon after the matter was reported, Haveri city police reached the spot and began an investigation. Officers are examining CCTV footage from nearby locations and gathering other evidence to trace those responsible. A suo motu case was registered at the Haveri City police station, and efforts are under way to identify and arrest the accused.
Haveri district Congress committee president Sanjeevkumar Neeralagi strongly condemned the act, calling for swift identification of the culprits and strict legal action. He said vandalising Mahatma Gandhi's statue was an attack on national values and must be dealt with firmly.
Haveri municipality commissioner Kantaraju H confirmed that a complaint was filed and said police have been urged to conduct a thorough investigation and take appropriate action against those involved.
