DHARWAD: A college student allegedly died by suicide in Karnataka's Dharwad, after which three policemen were suspended following allegations of harassment raised by victim's family, officials said on Wednesday.
The deceased has been identified as Aditya Myageri, a BSc student at a private college, was among 18 students detained by Vidyagiri police on April 25 during an anti-drug drive.
Aditya Myageri, originally from Belur village in Bagalkot district, Aditya was staying with friends in a rented house in Girinagar area of Dharwad city.
Accroding to police, 18 students were tested for ganja consumption, and Aditya was among those who tested negative. He was later released, while some of his roommates tested positive.
However, the family alleged that despite testing negative, he was harassed by police. They also claimed that certain officers demanded Rs 2,000 to settle the matter and threatened him with legal action if the money was not paid.
The family further said he had called his mother asking for money, but she was unable to arrange it immediately.
On Monday night, Aditya was found dead by suicide at his rented accommodation, allegedly by hanging from a ceiling fan.
Police Commissioner N Shashi Kumar confirmed that an unnatural death case has been registered at Vidyagiri police station. He also said three policemen have been suspended and a detailed investigation is underway.
