Woman arrested for murder of mother in Sribhumi
Silchar: A 30-year-old woman has been arrested for allegedly murdering her mother in a gruesome incident that has rattled a village in Sribhumi district.Police said the victim, identified as 55-year-old Rupjan Bibi, was found inside her house at Bazaricherra on Sunday afternoon with her throat slit and her head severed. Acting on a tip-off, police arrested her daughter, Momina Begum, in connection with the crime. The incident came to light after neighbours, alarmed by the lack of response from Rupjan’s house for several hours, alerted the police. A team from the Nagra police outpost, led by in-charge Abhijit Bharali, rushed to the spot and recovered the blood-soaked body from inside the house.Police cordoned off the area and launched a preliminary investigation as large crowds gathered, leading to tension in the locality. Suspicion initially centred on Momina Begum after she was found missing soon after the murder. Local residents told police she had not been seen since the incident.Momina was later traced and arrested from the same area and taken in for questioning. Preliminary findings, police said, indicate her alleged involvement in the crime.Meanwhile, the victim’s son lodged a written complaint at Bazaricherra police station, accusing his younger sister of killing their mother.
Based on the complaint, police registered a case and began a detailed probe. The body was sent to Sribhumi Civil Hospital for autopsy. Police said the report is expected to provide clarity on the exact cause and time of death.Describing the case as “extremely sensitive”, Bharali said initial indications suggest a family dispute may have been the motive, though investigators are examining all possible angles. “Nothing can be confirmed until the investigation is completed,” he added.Police said the accused has been lodged at the women’s cell of Patharkandi police station and will be produced before a court after completion of legal formalities. Security has been tightened in and around Bazaricherra to prevent any untoward incident, as local residents demanded exemplary punishment.
