Berhampur: Steel and mines minister Bibhuti Bhusan Jena caught three sand-laden tractors allegedly illegally transporting sand from Maulabhanja under Digapahandi police station limits in Ganjam district on Sunday night. The drivers failed to produce valid permits when questioned, prompting Jena to order immediate action through Digapahandi police.Inspector-in charge, Digapahandi, P K Patra, said the vehicles have been seized and cases registered against the offenders, with notices issued to the drivers. Preliminary inquiry has revealed that they extracted the sand from the Ghodahada river bed at Maulabhanja, police said. This incident has raised concerns about mineral theft in the district. “Action should be taken against those involved in illegal mining,” said Saroj Pattanaik, a social activist, while demanding strict action against the offenders. On Nov 23, Ganjam police seized 25 vehicles carrying minor minerals. The minister said the govt has zero tolerance towards the theft of minor minerals, including sand. “We have also directed the district administration to crackdown on illegal mining and transportation of the sands, morrum and other minerals,” he said.In Jan 2024, the minister seized 20 sand-laden trucks at Barakoli village near Kantilo in Nayagarh district. He conducted raids to arrest those involved in illegal transportation of sand on Jan 13, 2024.
