Villagers of Mizoram’s Vaphai build relief camp for Myanmar refugees
Aizawl: Villagers of Vaphai in Mizoram’s northeastern Champhai district are constructing a relief camp for 42 refugees from Myanmar taking shelter in the village’s Fiaratui Middle School as the school is re-opening on Jan 7, the village council president Rengkhuma said on Saturday.Rengkhuma said the relief camp for refugees coming from Hrumhrang village of Falam township in Myanmar’s Chin state will be relocated soon after completion of the construction.“We will also construct another relief camp for 47 refugees coming from ‘K’ Haimual village of Falam township who are now lodged in the village community hall, but it will take time,” he said.Altogether, 89 refugees from Chin state of Myanmar are now taking refuge in the state.The fresh wave of refugees arrived at the nearby Saikhumphai hamlet situated along the Mizoram-Myanmar border river Tiau on the night of Nov 28 and others followed suit.Without any financial assistance from the state govt, the refugees are being provided food by the villagers in accordance with the arrangements made by the BDO of Khawbung block.
