Tripura CM to seek expansion of Churaibari check post with Assam

Agartala: Tripura chief minister Manik Saha on Monday announced that he will raise the issue of expanding and upgrading the Churaibari check post in North Tripura with his Assam counterpart to ensure smoother vehicle movement and stricter border checks.Speaking to the media after a two-day visit to North Tripura, Saha said, “I have received numerous complaints about the functioning of the Churaibari check post, which led me to conduct a physical inspection of the situation. I found the grievances to be genuine.”He stressed that the administration has been instructed to resolve the problems immediately. “The govt does not tolerate irregularities. Strict measures have been mandated, failing which further action will be taken,” he said.Saha pointed out that the Assam side of the border has limited space for checking, often leading to traffic congestion. “I will discuss expansion and development with the Assam CM and raise the matter during the upcoming plenary session, too,” he added.Highlighting environmental concerns, Saha said stone crushing units near the highway were operating in violation of norms. Regulations require such units to be located at least 100 meters away from the national highway. “These units were set up during the Left Front administration and have not been properly monitored,” he said.He announced that a meeting would be convened to deliberate on regulating and relocating the units. He also flagged the issue of overloaded trucks carrying stone materials, calling for reforms.During his visit, Saha inspected the IOCL depot in Dharmanagar, where he interacted with drivers and officials. He urged drivers not to make illegal payments and to report any such incidents directly to his office. “Such practices will not be tolerated,” he added.
