Shillong: The Shillong Muslim Forum on Friday voiced concern over the reported attack on the Tura Jama Masjid during the recent unrest in West Garo Hills and urged chief minister Conrad K Sangma to ensure protection of religious institutions and communal harmony.
In a letter to the CM, the forum condemned vandalism of places of worship, arson and violence that disturbed Meghalaya’s longstanding peace.
It stressed Muslims in Shillong value coexistence with tribal communities and support lawful efforts to safeguard indigenous rights.
The forum also expressed concern over public calls of “No Allahu Akbar in Meghalaya” during a recent meeting in Shillong, noting that the phrase, meaning “God is the Greatest,” is a sacred expression of faith used by Muslims during daily prayers and religious observances.
