MLA proposes renaming Badarpur as ‘Siddheshwar Dham’

Silchar: A proposal to rename the historic railway town of Badarpur as “Siddheshwar Dham” has been submitted to CM Himanta Biswa Sarma by Katigorah MLA Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha. However, it is seen as a move that could ignite debate over the town’s long-standing identity and cultural heritage.Speaking to reporters, Purkayastha said the proposal was part of a broader plan for Badarpur’s development and that the CM had responded positively to the suggestion. He added that discussions with residents and stakeholders would be held before any decision is taken.The proposed name, Siddheshwar Dham, draws inspiration from the region’s religious significance. However, the suggestion is expected to draw attention as Badarpur has long been known for its railway legacy and its association with a revered Pir-Sannyasi shrine, reflecting the area’s syncretic cultural traditions.One of the oldest towns in the Barak Valley, Badarpur has retained its name since the British era and remains an important railway junction in southern Assam. Any attempt to alter its identity is likely to spark public debate among residents, historians, and community groups.Purkayastha said the govt would take local opinion into account before proceeding. No official decision on the renaming has been announced yet.
