Mizoram gets independent NCC Group HQ
Aizawl: In a landmark development for the National Cadet Corps (NCC) in Mizoram, governor Gen. Vijay Kumar Singh on Friday ceremonially raised the NCC Group Headquarters at a programme held at the Mizoram University auditorium, formally inaugurating an independent group headquarters dedicated to NCC operations in the state, reports HC Vanlalruata.
As chief guest, the governor handed over the NCC Group Headquarters Aizawl flag to Group Commander Brig Gunjit Singh Arora, officially marking the raising of the headquarters. He also released a special commemorative “My Stamp” to mark the historic occasion. Sports & youth services minister Lalnghinglova Hmar attended as guest of honour.
Also present were Lt Col Clement Lalhmingthanga (Retd), MLA; Prof. Dibakar Chandra Deka, vice chancellor of Mizoram University; Maj Gen Anurag Vij, additional director general, NCC North Eastern Region; and senior officers and other guests.
Addressing the gathering, the governor called the independent NCC Group Headquarters a major milestone for Mizoram, noting the organisation’s growth since it was introduced in the state in 1964. He said the NCC’s role in building discipline and character is unmatched and recalled his own experience as an NCC cadet, describing it as strong preparation for those aspiring to join the Armed Forces.
The governor said the new headquarters would help expand NCC activities in Mizoram and urged cadets to uphold the NCC motto of “Unity and Discipline”. He commended the Mizoram NCC Band for its performances at Republic Day parades and encouraged continued excellence.
Citing NCC activities such as community service, disaster response, blood donation drives, environmental protection and social awareness programmes, the governor said these initiatives foster patriotism and prepare youth to contribute to society. He also noted the state government’s push for adventure tourism and expressed hope that more cadets would take part in adventure activities, while reaffirming government support for NCC growth in Mizoram.
A documentary on the history and achievements of the NCC in Mizoram was screened during the programme. Maj Gen Anurag Vij presented the official Group Headquarters banner to the Governor, and five NCC alumni and cadets were honoured with mementos. The Governor later interacted with NCC cadets.
Until now, NCC battalions in Mizoram operated under the Silchar Group Headquarters in Assam. With the new headquarters raised, Mizoram now has its own independent NCC Group Headquarters commanded by a Brigadier.
The NCC was first established in Mizoram in 1964. The state currently has four NCC units—three in Aizawl (20 Mizoram Battalion NCC, 1 Mizoram Battalion NCC and 1 Mizoram Air Squadron NCC) and one in Lunglei (2 Mizoram Battalion NCC).
