Sribhumi man accused of using AI to make morphed video, held
Silchar: A 28-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly creating and circulating a fake obscene video of a woman using artificial intelligence (AI) tools and blackmailing her, police said on Friday.The accused, Ripon Nath, a resident of Ratabari in Sribhumi district, was apprehended from Hyderabad by a team from Gumrah police station following a coordinated operation. He was brought to Silchar on transit remand and is currently in police custody.

According to police, Nath was employed with a private firm in Hyderabad. He allegedly contacted a woman from the Gumrah area in Cachar district over the phone and proposed an illicit relationship. When she rejected his advances, he allegedly used AI-based applications to fabricate an explicit video featuring her and circulated it on social media.Police said the accused subsequently used the morphed video to blackmail the woman for several days. Unable to bear the harassment, she lodged a complaint at Gumrah police station.Police reiterated that strict action would be taken against those involved in cybercrimes, particularly cases involving misuse of AI technology for defamation, harassment or extortion.Officials said electronic devices seized from the accused have been sent for forensic examination.
