IIT-G, GU shine in NIRF rankings

Guwahati: In a significant achievement for the northeast, the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IIT-G) and Gauhati University (GU) have secured spots among the Top 10 higher educational institutions in India, according to the latest NIRF Rankings released by the education ministry. IIT Guwahati maintained its 10th position in the research category, while Gauhati University made an impressive leap to 9th place in the state public university category, up from 13th last year.Assam education minister Ranoj Pegu extended his congratulations to Gauhati University for its remarkable progress. GU Vice-Chancellor Prof Mahanta attributed this success to the collective efforts of the university’s faculty, students, and administrative staff, emphasizing the importance of each individual's contribution in elevating the institution's academic standards.Despite IIT-G’s strong performance, it experienced a slight dip in the engineering category, slipping from 7th to 8th place, and in the overall category, moving from 9th to 11th. In the overall rankings, GU was placed 52nd, while NIT Silchar secured the 97th position.In the university category, Assam’s institutions stood out, with GU ranked 33rd, Tezpur University 79th, and Assam University 97th. Mizoram University also made the list at 82nd.
Pachhunga University College was the only college from the northeast to feature in the top 100, securing the 49th rank.In the engineering category, apart from IIT-G, NIT Silchar and NIT Meghalaya were ranked 50th and 83rd, respectively. IIM Shillong was the sole representative in the management category, ranked 38th.In the pharmacy category, the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research Guwahati excelled at 12th, with Dibrugarh University and Assam University following at 53rd and 76th, respectively. The National Law University and Judicial Academy, Kamrup, achieved the 35th rank, marking it as the only law institute from the northeast to be recognized in the law category.
