Dibrugarh fortifies security as CM set to unfurl Tricolour on Republic Day
Dibrugarh: Amid a boycott call by the outlawed Ulfa (Independent), Dibrugarh has been fortified with extensive security as chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma prepares to hoist the national flag at Khanikar Parade Ground on Monday, leading the state-level celebrations of the 77th Republic Day.
This marks the second consecutive year that the CM will preside over Republic Day celebrations in Dibrugarh, reinforcing the city’s status as Assam’s emerging second capital. In a historic departure from traditions last year, CM Sarma unfurled the tricolour in Dibrugarh for the first time. He established a new pattern, where he participates in Independence Day celebrations in Guwahati, while marking Republic Day in the upper Assam city.
Dibrugarh senior superintendent of police Abhijit Gurav on Friday outlined the extensive security apparatus being put in place. “We have established a three-layer security perimetre around the parade ground and its vicinity. Our approach involve extensive ground-level preparations to ensure foolproof arrangements for the CM’s visit,” Gurav said, adding that the preparations involved meticulous coordination between multiple security agencies.
The security blueprint includes an intensive house-to-house verification drive covering a 1,800-metre radius from the parade ground, designed to identify and eliminate potential vulnerabilities.
“We are conducting thorough verification to ensure no security loopholes exist in the area surrounding the venue,” Gurav added.
Authorities have deployed cutting-edge surveillance technology, including continuous CCTV monitoring, sniffer dog squads, and metal detection systems to create an impenetrable security shield. “Round-the-clock surveillance using advanced technological tools has been activated to guarantee maximum safety for all participants and spectators,” the SSP said.
Strategic temporary checkpoints have been established on all approach roads leading to the parade ground, staffed by armed personnel conducting rigorous inspections.
“Every entry and exit point to the town is being monitored closely. Vehicle and personal checks are being carried out systematically to intercept any potential threats. Abandoned and unclaimed vehicles have been removed from the roads. Area domination exercises, night patrolling, and river patrolling are being conducted continuously to maintain vigilance,” Gurav said.
The protective umbrella extends well beyond the parade ground, encompassing critical infrastructure across Dibrugarh. Dibrugarh Airport, the railway station, Bogibeel Bridge, oil pipelines, major road bridges, bus terminals, and commercial marketplaces have all been placed under enhanced security protocols.
“Our objective is singular and clear — to ensure that citizens can celebrate Republic Day peacefully and without fear,” the SSP added.
The district administration has appealed to citizens to cooperate with security personnel and report any suspicious activities to ensure smooth conduct of the celebrations.
