Dibrugarh: A devastating fire broke out in the early hours of Friday at the CSIR–North East Institute of Science and Technology (NEIST) in Jorhat, triggering a massive emergency response that lasted nearly ten hours before the blaze was finally brought under control.
A firefighter sustained injury after chemicals accidentally fell on his leg during the operation. He was rushed to the Jorhat Medical College and Hospital.
According to officials, the fire erupted around 2 am at the institute’s central warehouse, where large quantities of chemical substances and various research materials were stored. Within moments of, the blaze triggered more than ten powerful explosions in quick succession. A total of 15 fire tenders were deployed.
“The presence of chemicals made the fire exceptionally difficult to extinguish the fire,” a fire safety official said.
