Silchar: University Grants Commission has approved the establishment of an Assamese department at Assam University’s main campus, paving the way for the long-pending academic expansion.
In its recommendation, the UGC proposed that the department begins with seven teaching positions — one professor, two associate professors and four assistant professors — along with two non-teaching staff members. The approval followed an assessment by a permanent expert committee, which examined the university’s proposal and endorsed the rationale for opening the department.
Confirming the development, Assam University vice-chancellor Rajive Mohan Pant said the university is awaiting the formal govt order. “We have received a copy of the UGC letter and discussed the matter in the executive council meeting on Dec 18. We are ready to start the Assamese department at the earliest,” Pant added.
