Assam saw sharp fall in crime in 2024, conviction rate lags: NCRB

The state registered 49,552 cases in 2024, down from 64,959 in 2023 and 68,937 in 2022. This marks a 28% fall in two years, positioning Assam among the states with the fastest reduction in reported crime.
With a projected population base of 361.6 lakh, Assam’s crime rate stood at 137 per lakh population, well below the national average of 418. The report also notes that Assam’s charge-sheeting rate improved to 67.1% in 2024, compared to below 50% in earlier years.
However, the state’s conviction rate was just 22.3%, far lower than the national average of 53.3%, highlighting a gap between investigation and prosecution.
