Silchar: Six persons, including a woman, were arrested on Thursday afternoon for allegedly slaughtering a cow during Eid-ul-Zuha celebrations at Bariknagar, on the outskirts of Silchar, police said.
Sources said Bajrang Dal activists informed police after learning about the incident. Soon after, several members of the outfit gathered near the area and staged a protest, triggering tension in the locality.
Police personnel from the Ghungoor outpost, along with Cachar SP Sanjib Kumar Saikia, rushed to the spot and arrested the accused, who were allegedly involved in the slaughter.
Police sources said suspected beef and slaughtering equipment were seized from the site during the operation. The arrested persons are currently being interrogated in police custody.
Following the incident, security was intensified in the area to prevent any untoward situation.
Meanwhile, Bajrang Dal members and BJP workers assembled outside Ghungoor police station and demanded stringent punishment for the accused.
“Muslim organisations and individuals across the state responded positively to CM Himanta Biswa Sarma’s appeal to refrain from cow slaughter out of respect for the sentiments of the majority community. However, some people are acting against that sentiment and should face the strictest punishment,” a Bajrang Dal activist told the media.
