Guwahati: An 18-year-old labourer fell to death from the Kumar Bhaskar Varma bridge on Sunday after trying to film a reel on the railings.
According to North Guwahati police, the youth, Rabil Ali from Barpeta district, was accompanied by three other individuals, when the tragic incident unfolded.
“We received information that the youth had climbed onto a section of the railings to make a reel on social media. In the process, he lost his balance and slipped, falling onto a sand bar below, where several construction materials were kept. People immediately raised an alarm and alerted us,” said Ratul Das, the officer-in-charge of North Guwahati police station.
While the body has been sent to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for a postmortem examination, locals raised suspicion of drug abuse among the four.
Rabil’s three other companions, Saidul Ali, Rabiul Ali and Faruk Ali, have been detained by the cops for questioning. “We are investigating the matter and are trying to ascertain as to how he slipped and fell,” a police officer said.
Kumar Bhaskar Varma Bridge, which connects the main city to the northern banks of the Brahmaputra, was inaugurated by PM Modi in February. This is a first such incident which has been reported on the bridge.
