1.7L illegals detected, 31K sent back since Assam Accord: Bora
Guwahati: More than 1.70 lakh illegal foreigners have been detected in Assam, while about 31,000 have been pushed back since the Assam Accord was signed four decades ago at the end of a six-year long mass agitation against illegal immigration, the state govt informed the state assembly on Wednesday.
Assam Accord implementation minister Atul Bora told the House that in the past year alone, 1,421 were sent back under orders from the ministry of home affairs and 52 declared foreigners were expelled under the Immigrants (Expulsion from Assam) Act, 1950.
Bora said according to the provisions of the Accord, 1,37,152 immigrants who entered Assam after March 25, 1971, and another 33,485 who arrived between 1966 and 1971 have been identified and declared foreigners. He added that from 1985 to March 2013, 29,663 illegal foreigners were sent back through the ‘Push Back’ process, while between 2013 and Jan 2026, 468 were deported, including 458 convicted foreigners.
On border security, Bora said Assam shares 267.5km of boundary with Bangladesh, of which 228.541km has been fenced. Only a 4.35km stretch in Sribhumi district remains unfenced due to objections from the Border Guard Bangladesh, while the riverine stretches are monitored through the Comprehensive Integrated Border Management System by the BSF.
The minister also addressed the implementation of Clause 6 of the Accord, which promises constitutional safeguards for the people of Assam. He noted that the Justice (retd) Biplab Sharma committee’s report with 67 recommendations has been examined, with 52 falling under the state’s purview already in progress, while the Centre has been approached for the remaining 15. A subcommittee of ministers and Aasu representatives submitted its report in Nov 2025 and steps are underway for implementation.
Bora further said the Bangladesh border in Assam is currently guarded by 91 BSF border outposts, 14 Assam Police BOPs and 14 patrol posts, with plans to add 13 more BOPs and 12 border police stations.
