MCG installs real-time sewer sensors to prevent overflows, flooding
Gurgaon: MCG is installing smart sensors in critical sewer lines and flood-prone locations ahead of the monsoon to curb sewer overflows and waterlogging.
The sensors have been developed in partnership with AIResQ, an IIT Gandhinagar-incubated startup, to provide real-time monitoring of the sewer network.
The system will initially monitor water levels in real time at 20 strategically identified sewage, drainage, and flood-prone surface-water locations. The monitoring network will be expanded further based on operational requirements and monsoon performance assessments.
The sensors will instantly alert control rooms to rising water levels, blockages or any potential risk of floods. The system will automatically generate alerts as soon as water levels exceed predefined limits or any obstruction affects the flow. The early-warning system will help authorities deploy response teams faster and address the issues before they escalate.
MCG commissioner Pradeep Dahiya said, “MCG is taking all necessary preparations ahead of the monsoon season. The installation of sensors in sewer lines is a significant step towards technology-driven proactive monitoring. Our goal is to provide citizens with better, seamless and hassle-free sewerage services during the monsoon.”
MCG additional commissioner Yash Jaluka said the technology is expected to make public spaces cleaner and reduce health risks at the same time. “MCG is increasingly leveraging digital and smart technologies to strengthen the city’s sanitation and sewerage infrastructure. The sensor-based system will not only help prevent sewer overflows but will also support better maintenance planning and more efficient utilisation of resources,” he said.
