GURGAON: For these two young sisters, home was never a haven, but a place of fear and unimaginable trauma. The veil was lifted when a 12-year-old girl - desperate and terrified - broke her silence before her class teacher. On Sept 4, the Class 6 student of a govt senior secondary school was found weeping before her teacher, her wrist bearing a fresh, jagged cut. This was an injury she had inflicted on herself to escape the trauma at home, and the school's principal had threatened her with expulsion for harming herself.Pleading before her teacher to let her stay in school, the girl narrated her ordeal. What she revealed was a nightmare that had haunted her for two years. She confided that her own father had been sexually abusing her since she was 10. The horror did not end there - her elder sister, now 17, had endured the same abuse for nearly six years. Their father, she said, would often return home in a drunk state and force the girls into his room. When they tried to resist, he would beat them up. Their mother, too, was not spared. She was frequently assaulted with sticks whenever she tried to intervene or protect her daughters, the girl alleged.
The teacher - shocked by the confession - alerted the authorities. DCP (west) Karan Goel ordered the prompt arrest of the father on Thursday. He was picked up and remanded in judicial custody. The girl's mother - a homemaker - described the years of violence that left her and her daughters living in constant fear.
