Rare planetary line-up to light up Goa’s sky tonight

Panaji: Skywatchers are in for a celestial treat on Feb 28, as a planetary line-up coincides with the National Science Day. The phenomenon will be observed across the state through public viewing sessions organised by the Association of Friends of Astronomy (AFA), Goa, which also celebrates its 44th anniversary that day.National Science Day is observed to commemorate the discovery of the Raman Effect by Indian physicist Sir CV Raman in 1928.According to AFA, sunset in Goa on Feb 28 will be at 6.41pm. Shortly after, Mercury, Venus, and Saturn will appear just above the western horizon, near the sunset point. At the same time, Jupiter and the waxing gibbous Moon will be visible in the eastern sky. Uranus and Neptune will lie between these two groups, though they can be observed only through high-powered telescopes.Astronomy enthusiasts are advised to head to coastal areas to view the western horizon to witness the event. Observing the western cluster may be challenging, as the planets will appear in the bright twilight, while Uranus and Neptune will require powerful telescopic assistance.AFA will conduct observation sessions from 6.45pm to 8pm at Miramar, Bogmalo, and Benaulim beaches on Feb 28. A second session will be held on March 1 at Art Park, Porvorim. Entry is free and open to the public.
