Ponda civic body inspects new site for vendors

Ponda: A joint team from the Ponda Municipal Council and the Goa State Urban Development Agency inspected a site near Palika Bazaar on Friday for the relocation of 187 vendors, as the council is planning to reconstruct the current bazaar.

The vendors will be shifted to a temporary location until the construction and commissioning of the new building are completed, council chief officer Bhimnath Khorjuvekar said.

The Ponda Municipal Council had vacated the dilapidated fish market building about a year ago and is now planning to incorporate the fish market area into the new Palika Bazaar project.

Khorjuvekar said the new building will be constructed by the Goa State Urban Development Agency , which has also been entrusted with demolishing the dilapidated fish market structure.

He further added that the council would lease a private property for two years to relocate the vendors, as the new bazaar is expected to be completed within 18 months.

The existing Palika Bazaar currently operates from an open shed with a roof made of asbestos cement (AC) sheets. The new structure, Khorjuvekar said, will be a multi-storeyed building.
