In South Goa, 1,800 traffic fines during safety week

Margao: The South Goa traffic police issued over 1,800 challans during the recently concluded State Road Safety Week, with helmet violations and speeding emerging as the most common traffic offences.

DySP traffic (South Goa) Rajendra Prabhudessai said the highest number of violations were booked for motorcyclists riding without helmets, with 546 fines issued for this offence. Speeding violations followed closely, accounting for 404 challans during the week-long campaign. “These are the two offences that lead to fatal or grievous injuries,” Dy SP Prabhudessai said.

The enforcement drive also targeted other safety violations. Traffic police issued challans to 31 vehicles fitted with modified silencers, requiring owners to revert to the original equipment. Additionally, 50 vehicles were found equipped with improper lighting systems, including unauthorised extra lights, and were subsequently penalised. Thirty three offences were booked for vehicles found fitted with tinted glasses.

“We wish to stress that traffic safety observance should not be restricted to one week alone, but we should stay alert about it every second we are on the road,” an RTO official said.
