Karnataka Weather News Updates: Rain takes break; Orange alert for coastal areas

The Met department has issued an orange alert for four districts in Uttarakhand.

Heavy rains claimed the lives of at least four people in Telangana since Monday. Two teenage girls were washed away in a stream in Mahabubnagar district on Tuesday as heavy rains pummelled north Telangana districts with Velpur mandal in Nizamabad receiving a record 46. 3cm in a span of just six hours.In Mahabubnagar, Swathi (18) and her neighbour Anusha (17) were on their way to their agriculture field when they got swept away in Thoorpu vagu. Bodies of the two girls, who belonged to Kondeda in Jadcherla, were recovered half a kilometre from where they were washed away.

The India Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for Greater Hyderabad for Wednesday. The city and surrounding areas are likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall, ranging between 64 mm and 204 mm, in a 24-hour span. In view of the IMD’s heavy rain forecast for the city, the state government late Tuesday evening declared a two-day holiday on Wednesday and Thursday for all educational institutions.“The rains are likely to be more than what was seen on Monday when an intense spell occurred through theevening hours,” an IMD official said. “Usually, a red alert is issued when rain above 204 mm, categorised as extremely heavy rain, is likely. However, since it is the GHMCarea, where the risk of flooding and water-pooling is higher, we issued the alert” said an official.

The city’s weather on Tuesday remained uneven with some areas experiencing high-intensity rain while others having an overcast sky. The India Meteorological Department expects moderate rain in the region till Friday and has issued a yellow alert. The monsoon line of trough is currently over Rajasthan and is shifting towards Delhi-NCR. There is also an active western disturbance, creating favourable conditions for widespread or sporadic light to moderate rain over parts of Delhi-NCR.
