Over 4,200 people have lost their lives in floods in Assam and West Bengal since 2002, the government said on Thursday. Responding to a question in the Lok Sabha, Minister of State for Jal Shakti Bishweswa Tudu shared the data which showed that over Rs 80,000 crore worth of total damage has been incurred due to floods in these two states since 2002. According to the data, 1500 lives were lost in Assam while 2,722 people died in West Bengal since 2002 due to floods. West Bengal incurred a loss of Rs 64,726 crore and Assam Rs 16,346 crore due to floods since 2002. (PTI)
Two Indian Air Force (IAF) helicopters took off from Air Force Station Hakimpet near here and carried out a daring rescue of six people stranded on top of an earthmover in a flood-stricken village in Jayashankar Bhupalpally district in Telangana. The six persons were lifted from the top of the earthmover in Nainpaka village of the district. An official release said it has always been the endeavour of the IAF to rise to the occasion in not only defending the territorial skies but safeguarding the lives of the people against the vagaries of the weather in undertaking humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations under extremely adverse situations. IMD predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall, with extremely heavy rainfall of more than 114 mm to 204 mm is likely to occur at isolated places over all the districts of Coastal Karnataka. There will also be thunderstorms with lightning, accompanied by gusty winds with wind speed reaching 40-50 Kmph in isolated places over all the coastal districts till July 29, reports Stanly Pinto.
Two places in Kumta taluk of Uttara Kannada received the highest rainfall in the state. Hegde and Kodakani received 129 mm and 117 mm of rainfall respectively and Thagarasi in Kundapur Taluk received 112mm of rainfall. India Meteorological Department has warned fishermen not to venture into the Sea stating that squally weather with wind speed reaching 40-45 kmph gusting to 55 kmph is likely to prevail along and off Karnataka Coast till July 31. Meanwhile, Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) issued a rough sea alert stating high waves in the range of 3– 3.2 meters were predicted along the coast from Mangaluru to Karwar till Friday.
The intensity of the rain, in spite of a red alert, had reduced considerably giving some respite to people in affected areas of both the coastal districts, so were the water levels in the rivers. The sun also came out briefly in both the districts. IMD issued an orange alert for the three coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada for Friday. DK received an average rainfall of 45mm, with Moodbidri taluk receiving the highest at 65mm, followed by Kadaba and Belthangady taluks receiving more than 40mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours till Thursday 8.30am. The damage to Mescom infrastructure was 63 poles, one transformer and 3 km of supply lines in the last 24 hours. Udupi district received an average of 56mm of rainfall. Kundapur taluk received the highest rainfall at 70mm, followed by Byndoor at 62mm.
The state government which had declared a holiday for educational institutions on Wednesday and Thursday announced that Friday also would be a holiday.For the last one week, Telangana districts have been suffering the brunt of the heavy rain. The forecast is that several districts will get heavy rainfall in the next three days.There was heavy damage to the roads in Suryapet, Karimnagar, Kamareddy, Warangal, Jayashankar Bhupalpally, Rajanna Sircilla, Mulugu and Bhadradri Kothagudem district.
Relief camps have also been set up in Khammam district for people who were evacuated from low-lying areas. The Munneru river which is in spate has caused inundation in several villages.Several roads got cut off and police and revenue authorities barricaded roads leading to villages which were inundated. A pregnant woman, aged people and several families were also shifted to safety in Rajanna Sircilla district. In Saidpur mandal in Karimnagar district, officials evacuated children from a residential institution. Several houses have got submerged in Jammikunta town and people are being evacuated.
The affected people made videos showing their plight and sought to be rescued.The temple town of Bhadrachalam is also facing the brunt of the heavy rains as the Godavari water levels have crossed the second danger level mark. People living in some of the low-lying colonies which got inundated were shifted to safer places and relief camps. The Godavari Water Level reached 49.10 ft at 3 pm on Thursday. Transport minister P Ajay Kumar said it was possible that by Friday evening, the water level could reach 55 ft.As many as 25 villages were evacuated in Bhadradri Kothagudem district on account of the danger posed by the overflowing water of the Godavari. People from another 18 villages were also evacuated. The entire precincts of the Bhadrachalam temple were submerged due to the water.
Army helicopters have been pressed into service to carry out rescue operations in Moranchanpalle village in Jayashankar Bhupalpally district. The entire village got inundated because of the heavy rainfall and a local stream overflowing. People perched themselves on trees and got on to roof-tops to save themselves. The NDRF shifted several people to safety at different places in the state affected by the heavy rain.In Khammam district, the NDRF is trying to rescue seven people who got washed away because of the flooding caused by the Munneru river.The affected people made videos showing their plight and sought to be rescued.

Telangana Rains: In the morning, even though it did rain as much, strong winds were felt across the city. As a result, 38 full-grown trees fell, many of which had to be cut. According to GHMC’s Disaster Relief Force, on Road No. 14, a huge tree fell on Wednes day morning which took up to six hours to be removed. Telangana Floods: Hyderabad, which was on red alert for Wednesday, began seeing the impact of the low pressure by 9pm with heavy rains across the GHMC limits. By 10pm, Tolichowki received 60. 8mm rainfall, the highest in the limits, with predictions for more overnight rains of up to 100mm in various parts.
“There is a well-marked low-pressure area along with associated cyclonic circulation and shear zone,” said K Nagaratna, chief of India Meteorological Department, Hyderabad, adding that ‘red alert’ will continue in various districts on Thursday with rainfall up to 200mm also expected in several parts.
